Professional Experience

Carson Porter is a partner in Rimon's healthcare, litigation and startup company practice groups.  He has extensive private practice experience, including as Counsel with Arent Fox, business experience serving as CEO to several closely-held companies, and not-for-profit experience serving as Director, Board Member and General Counsel of several organizations.

Mr. Porter has represented many clients in the healthcare field, including more than 100 hospitals, as well as long term care and home health operators and practicing physicians involved in a variety of healthcare ventures. He has negotiated numerous financings and acquisitions of various business enterprises, with an emphasis on healthcare provider entities.

Mr. Porter argued and won the first case to be heard by the Medicare Provider Reimbursement Board. He participated on the legal team that structured the settlement of one of the largest fraud and abuse cases ever prosecuted by the United States, and acted as the lead counsel on five Medicare appeals filed on behalf of the Kentucky Hospital Association and its member hospitals.

Mr. Porter served as Chief Outside Counsel to NCRIC, a D.C.-based medical malpractice insurer.  In that role, he participated in taking the company from a mutual structure to a publicly traded entity and handled contract dispute in federal court which led to successful settlement for the client.

Career Highlights to Date:

  • U.S. Supreme Court:  In 1975 (at age 30) he argued and won a case before the U. S. Supreme Court, making him one of the youngest attorneys to do so.  Paul v. Davis, 424 U.S. 693. For a summary of the case and to listen to an audiotape of the oral argument, click here

  • Member, Young President’s Organization (YPO) and World President’s Organization (WPO); founder of YPO Healthcare Focus Forum which after 20 years has over 100 active members who are CEOs of healthcare business entities

Business Leadership Experience:

  • CEO of several closely-held companies ranging in size up to 2,500 employees

  • RES-CARE: served as CEO and Director for 3+ years wherein revenue grew from $30 million to over $70 million and earnings increased 150%; during tenure won several federal and state contracts with Dept. of Labor and HHS in addition to array of state agencies

  • Sterling Care: took startup to over $30 million in annual revenue in 18 months through successful acquisition of eight long-term care facilities

Not-For-Profit Experience:

  • National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) Founding Director, a not-for-profit entity established to focus attention on issues relating to patient safety in the U.S. healthcare delivery system.  Also served as Chairman of the NPSF Development Committee and as a member of its Executive Committee

  • Starlight Children’s Foundation--MidAtlantic, Inc Founding Director.  SCF provides entertainment therapy resources for seriously ill children throughout hospitals in the Washington, DC area

  • The International Community of Enlightened Entrepreneurs, Chairman of the Board.  The mission of ICEE is to connect socially-minded entrepreneurs around the globe
